America’s First Lady
Dolley Madison is one of the most beloved women in American history. Transforming the often bitter and contentious political battles of the day, Dolley Madison invited legislators and commoners to the drawing room of the White House every Wednesday evening for music, food, and — above all — civility. These gatherings became so popular that they were nicknamed “Squeezes” — referring to the large number of people in attendance.
While she is often remembered for her skills as a hostess, or as the First Lady who saved George Washington’s portrait during the war of 1812, Dolley is more aptly portrayed by historians as a gifted communicator with a finely tuned political instinct — America’s first First Lady!
