Madison Brief: Guns, Polls and GOP Coup?

Filibuster Brings Gun Bills to the Floor:  After his nearly 15 hour filibuster to bring attention to gun reform, Senator Chris Murphy won a small victory last week:
four gun bills will go up for a vote on Monday.  While it is unlikely any will pass with the required 60 votes, at least the Senators will have to go on record as to where they stand on gun reform.  Here are the bills up for vote:

  • The “Gun Show Loophole” bill, which would require that all gun buyers get background checks when purchasing guns: Sponsored by Murphy, D, Connecticut.
  • The “No Fly, No Buy” bill which would  ban people on the terrorism watch lists from buying guns: Sponsored by Feinstein, D, California.
  • A bill that would allow the US Attorney General to impose a 3-day delay of a gun purchase by a known or suspected terrorist, in order to investigate the buyer more thoroughly.   Sponsored by Cornyn, R, Texas., Only bill supported by the NRA.
  • A bill that would alert the FBI of terrorism suspects who have purchased a gun, without blocking the purchase outright:  Sponsored by Grassley, R, Iowa.

Race to the Bottom:  An ABC/Survey Monkey poll shows that Donald Trump’s poll numbers are drowning with 70% of respondents having an unfavorable opinion of him.  Worse yet, thU0GRJCDT56% of those folks went so far as to say they had a  “strongly unfavorable” opinion of him (aka, ain’t gonna vote for him, no how, no way).  This is good news for Clinton who is also underwater with her unfavorables at 55% (39% think she is “strongly unfavorable”).  Kinda makes her candidacy look downright buoyant!

Could there be a Cruz Coup Brewing?:  At least three former Cruz campaign operatives are seriously working to stop Trump at the convention. Sound like a long shot?  Consider this: during the primary election, the Cruz folks were quite adept at putting “Pro-Cruz th8A85TVZJDelegates” on the powerful GOP Rules Committee in anticipation of a contested convention.   While the “Cruz Crew” denies any direct involvement with Cruz, one has to wonder what the candidate with the second highest number of delegates is doing with his spare time since suspending his campaign….
